A Cross-Country Christmas (Road Trip Romance #1) by Courtney Walsh

Summary (from the publisher): Lauren Richmond isn’t a fan of Christmas.

Which is why she rarely makes the trip home to the Midwest for the holidays. After all, she has plenty to keep her busy—namely, her duties as a set decorator on a TV sitcom.

But this December, Lauren‘s brother and his wife are expecting a baby, so her brother arranges a ride home for her with his good friend, Will.

Unfortunately for Lauren, she’s been trying to forget college baseball coach and childhood crush Will Sinclair for more than ten years.

Now, thanks to her fear of flying, she’s stuck in a car with him from California to Illinois.

She’s circumspect and organized. He’s flirty and spontaneous.

She’s convinced that people don’t change. He’s trying to prove to her (and himself) that he has.

On this cross-country road trip, they’ll both discover that history doesn’t exactly repeat itself. . . but like any good Christmas carol, it does have a second verse.

Review: Lauren Richmond finds herself having to take a road trip with her brother's best friend Will in order to make it to her brother's house in time for the birth of his first child and Christmas. Unfortunately for Lauren, she has had a crush on college baseball coach Will for years but after a bad experience years before, has no interest in spending time with him. Now, thanks to her fear of flying, she finds herself embarking on a road trip with him from California to Illinois.

This was such a cute read! The audio was outstanding, with dual narration, which always adds so much to my enjoyment of a story. I loved hearing from both Lauren and Will's perspectives as the story went along. A road trip scenario gave us plenty of time to get to know the characters and for them to get to know one another well. I loved seeing them open up to one another and also unpack each other's biggest hangups and regrets as the story unspools.

This is set at Christmastime and certainly has lots of Christmas-y scenes but I think it would really hold up if read at any time. It was a great, no spice love story that still had lots of chemistry and yearning. I especially liked all the flashbacks of a much younger Lauren and Will, when she was deep in her crush stage with Will, because they gave such great context for the animosity Lauren has for Will in the present day.

I don't know if I'll necessarily retain a ton of this story as time goes on and beyond the Christmas setting and the road trip, it felt a lot like a lot of other romance stories I've read this year. But it was cute and a fast read.
