A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows (Outlander #8.5) by Diana Gabaldon

Summary (from the publisher): Available for the first time as an audiobook in this original Outlander novella, Diana Gabaldon reveals what really happened to Roger MacKenzie Wakefield's parents. Orphaned during World War II, Roger believed that his mother died during the London Blitz, and that his father, an RAF pilot, was killed in combat. But in An Echo n the Bone, Roger discovers that this may not be the whole story. Now, in A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows, readers finally learn the truth.

Review: In this Outlander novella, author Diana Gabaldon reveals what really happened to Roger MacKenzie Wakefield's parents. Roger believes that his mother died during the London Blitz and his father, an RAF pilot, was killed in combat. In this novella, the reader follows along on his father Jerry's last fateful mission to discover what really happened.

This was obviously very short. Less than a hundred pages or right around two hours of audio, it is only a short story so can only give so much more information. But this is the first time readers meet Roger's parents, who have always been dead in the main series of the books. It was nice to meet them through this novella and see how much they loved each other and loved their son. It also helped explain how Roger can travel through time like Claire and Brianna; he clearly inherited that ability. On the other hand, as you might guess from the fact that Roger's parents are dead in all of the Outlander novels, this was a sad story.

Although this doesn't have a happy ending and the fact remains true that Roger was raised not knowing his parents, this was a great little text that gave additional background to one of the main characters of the Outlander series.
