The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion: Vol. 3 (The Unselected Journals #3) by Beth Brower
Summary (from the publisher): "It has been a day ordained by the fates, for how else could one explain the wholly cursed chain of events?" The Year is 1883 and Emma M. Lion has returned to her London Neighborhood of St. Crispian's. But Emma's plan for a charmed and studious life are sabotaged by her eccentric Cousin Archibald, her formidable Aunt Eugenia, and the slightly odd denizens of St. Crispian's. Emma M. Lion offers up her Unselected Journals, however self-incriminating they may be, which comprise a series of novella-length volumes. Armed with wit and a sideways amusement, Emma documents the curious realities of her life at Lapis Lazuli House.
Review: This third installment in the series continues the delightful tale of Emma M. Lion in 1883 and her life in Lapis Lazuli House in London. Her Cousin Archibald continues to be a veritable menace, her Aunt Eugenia continues to frequently demand her attendance at various social events, and she grows closer to the Tenant of her apartment Mr. Pierce and her sometimes social acquaintance, the Duke of Islington.
Emma continues to be as charming and delightful a character as ever. A woman after my own heart, Emma describes her perfect lifestyle thus: "Don't think I mind a routine, that's just what I'm craving. But the right routine. My routine. Two walks a day, several hours of reading, perhaps one visit with someone I enjoy. One dinner or entertainment per week if you must, possibly two, but please let there be reading" (105).
These books are so brief that you can't help but want to immediately launch into the next installment. I love the writing style, the humor, the main character, but am also intrigued by the plot. Looking forward to reading book four.
