Review: Briony Rosewood is a princess raised in a world that has tentative peace with the enemy. She is educated in a communal setting with all the youth of both factions. But when the other side stages a takeover, Briony is stripped of her magic and freedom and sold off to the highest bidder in an auction to be used for her magical abilities. She is sold to one Toven Hearst, the son of a prominent family of the enemy known for their cruelty.

A disclaimer that this will absolutely NOT be for everyone, but it was 100% for me. My first fan fic book and I loved it so, so much. Pure entertainment! Stayed up way too late night after night for this story. I would liken this to a fantasy The Handmaid's Tale plus a whole lot of heated chemistry between our main characters. The tension between the main characters was so compelling to me and I was so curious to see how the story would unfold.

This story felt dark, but I also thought the author hinted at a lot that never comes to pass. Briony is relatively privileged compared to many other women in this book. Also, unfortunately we very much live in a world where women are abused and exploited because of their sex, and it was hard to be too terribly shocked to read fictional scenarios that mirrored reality. I will say that some of the scenes seemed solely contrived to force the main characters into close proximity. There were also so many flashbacks and things not revealed until much after the fact about Briony's early interactions with the MMC that felt a little manipulative.

All that being said, I absolutely flew through this book and was crushed when it was over. Dying that I have to wait months and months until book two comes out.
