A Court of Frost and Starlight (A Court of Thorns and Roses 3.1) by Sarah J. Maas

Summary (from the publisher): A new, original novella in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series that picks up after the events of A Court of Wings and Ruin. Months after the explosive events in A Court of Wings and Ruin, Feyre, Rhys, and their companions are still busy rebuilding the Night Court and the vastly changed world beyond. But Winter Solstice is finally near, and with it, a hard-earned reprieve. Yet even the festive atmosphere can't keep the shadows of the past from looming. As Feyre navigates her first Winter Solstice as High Lady, she finds that those dearest to her have more wounds than she anticipated - scars that have far-reaching impact on the future of their Court.

Review: In this new novella, the storyline picks up where book three in the series left off. In it Feyre, Rhys, and their friends are busy rebuilding their lives after the wake of war and preparing to celebrate the Winter Solstice. Yet even in the absence of war and with the planned festivities, the shadows of the past dim everyone's enthusiasm. In particular, Feyre's sisters are unhappy and at odds with their prospective love interests and with Feyre herself.

For fans of the series, this was a lovely way to continue the story and to allow an inside look at the characters now that they aren't engaged in active battle. For anyone looking for action and supernatural battles, this book will likely disappoint. Instead, it is filled with worries about what gift to buy each other to celebrate Winter Solstice, Feyre reconnecting with her love for painting, and domestic concerns as Rhys and Feyre realize that between the two of them and all of their companions, they have outgrown their home.

One of the greatest strengths of this book moves beyond focusing strictly on Feyre's point of view. In this novel, we get chapters from an assorted range of characters. While she remains the main character, it was nice to get insight into other characters' actions and feelings and staged the scene for exploring other love stories in the next installment of the series.

This was a brief novella and not much of any significance plot wise occurred. But I enjoyed the focus on relationships between all of the characters and more domestic concerns. It was nice to have a break from the turmoil and fighting and instead focus on the lives involved. But at heart, this was a teaser for the next book in the series, which I am looking forward to reading soon.
