Because of Miss Bridgerton (Rokesbys #1) by Julia Quinn

Summary (from the publisher): Sometimes you find love in the most unexpected of places...

This is not one of those times.

Everyone expects Billie Bridgerton to marry one of the Rokesby brothers. The two families have been neighbors for centuries, and as a child the tomboyish Billie ran wild with Edward and Andrew. Either one would make a perfect husband... someday.

Sometimes you fall in love with exactly the person you think you should...

Or not.

There is only one Rokesby Billie absolutely cannot tolerate, and that is George. He may be the eldest and heir to the earldom, but he's arrogant, annoying, and she's absolutely certain he detests her. Which is perfectly convenient, as she can't stand the sight of him, either.

But sometimes fate has a wicked sense of humor...

Because when Billie and George are quite literally thrown together, a whole new sort of sparks begins to fly. And when these lifelong adversaries finally kiss, they just might discover that the one person they can't abide is the one person they can't live without...

Review: Set in the distant past before the Bridgerton series, the Bridgerton family has grown up close friends with the Rokesby family. Growing up, Sybilla or "Billie" Bridgerton always expected to marry one of the Rokesby brothers. Billie is tomboyish and ran wild with Edward and Andrew Rokesby and while she views them as brothers knows they would make a great husband...one day. Until the day that Billie makes the mistake of trying to help a cat, winds up trapped on a roof, and oldest brother George Rokesby comes to her aid. Billie has always assumed George disliked her and found her annoying, but all of a sudden, their view of one another begins to slowly shift.

This was an entertaining prequel novel. I was delighted to rejoin the world of the Bridgertons and their sweet romances. Billie is spirited and independent and Quinn created the perfect match for her in the responsible and caring George. I especially loved that the mother's role in the match making in this novel.

As usual, these novels aren't going for historical accuracy.  There's far too much pre-marital relations for a young maiden to be believable. But the books are so delightfully entertaining that I always find it forgivable. These are lighthearted, feel-good romances and they make me happy to read them. I do wish the novel had made it clear the connection between the Bridgertons of the original series and the Bridgerton family in this prequel series. It's clearly set many years before, but it would be interesting to know the connection.
