Every Hour Until Then (Timeless #5) by Gabrielle Meyer

Summary (from the publisher): Gifted with the ability to time-cross between Victorian-era London and World War II Washington, DC, Kathryn faces two lives fraught with danger. In 1938 amid the looming shadow of war, Kathryn is invited to the London Museum as a guest curator to create a groundbreaking exhibit on Jack the Ripper and his reign of terror. As she delves into her grim research, she uncovers a chilling discovery: her own sister is destined to become the Ripper's final victim decades earlier.

In 1888, in a race against fate, Kathryn is assisted by her handsome childhood friend in hunting down history's most elusive killer. As they unravel the threads of mystery woven through time, Kathryn must decide if she'll unmask the murderer history has chosen to hide, forfeiting a life with the man she loves to save her sister.

Bestselling author Gabrielle Meyer presents yet another thrilling time-travel tale of intrigue, loyalty, and romance--threaded with suspense and decisions that could change history.

Review: Every single time I read a book in the Timeless series I think, there is no way Gabrielle Meyer can top the plot of the last book! And yet somehow, every single time, she does! This one was possibly the most tension-filled, high stakes book yet. Kathryn is a time traveler who lives dual lives in 1888 and 1938. She is intent on choosing 1938 where she is close to her mother who was also a time crosser and enjoying a career as a guest curator at the London Museum for an exhibit on Jack the Ripper. But her research leads to her realize that her sister in 1888 is one of the Ripper's victims. Now, Kathryn must decide if she should save her sister and thereby forfeiting her 1888, which includes the man she is in love with.

The conceit of the time crossing in Meyer's books is that they transition to their other timeline once they fall asleep. I guess it is good it is Kathryn and not me in this book because I would have been so stressed out, I never would have fallen asleep! The inclusion of the Jack the Ripper, a famously unsolved serial killer, into the story was such a brilliant move that really made this a dramatic read. Meyer concluded the story with her own unique time crossing twist on Jack the Ripper that I thought was well done and fun way to tie up the story. Kathryn did stress me out in this though and seemed to take great risks getting so close to known jack the ripper murder sites/victims.

Another thing that stood out to me about this installment in the series versus the earlier books is how close the two pathways were. This led to interesting entanglements since Kathryn could potentially run into people from her 1888 pathway 50 years later if they were still living.

I also was absolutely delighted to discover that Lady Astor was one of the characters in this book! I read a biography of the Langhornes of Virginia years ago that has always stuck with me and it was so fun to see Nancy Langhorne Astor pop up in this book as a side character. As always, Meyer has meticulously researched and woven in historical details in this book in a really seamless way.

This is the 8th book I've read by Gabrielle Meyer but the first one I've ever read on audio! It was very well done, and the narrator did a great job switching the accents to help the reader stay grounded in the appropriate timeline.
