Mile High (Windy City #1) by Liz Tomforde

Summary (from the publisher): ZANDERS

Chicago hockey isn't complete without me - everyone's favourite player to hate. I know my role, and I play it well. In fact, I thoroughly enjoy spending the majority of my game time in the penalty box before leaving the arena with a new girl on my arm each night.

What I don't like is the new flight attendant on our team's private plane. She works for me, not the other way around. But I'll be sure to remind her of that, and I can guarantee, by the end of the season, she'll be begging to quit her job.

But every road trip blurs the lines, and I can't quite figure out if I keep pushing that flight attendant call button in order to push her buttons, or if it's more than that.

STEVIE

I've been a flight attendant for years. I thought I'd seen it all, but when my new job lands me onboard working for the most egotistical and self-righteous diva in the NHL, I start to second guess everything. Including the promise I made to myself of never hooking up with an athlete again . . . no matter how annoyingly tempting he may be.

Evan Zanders is unfiltered, unapologetic, and too attractive for his own good. He loves his image, but I hate everything about it.

Review: Evan Zanders is professional hockey player and a confirmed bad boy, who fully embraces this image among his fans. Stevie is a flight attendant assigned to the plane that will take the NHL boys around the country to their games. Evan immediately notices his curvy flight attendant, but Stevie is put off by his arrogant demeanor and reputation. By as the season goes on, she is increasingly tempted to hook up with the hot athlete. The only problem is the confirmed playboy might not be able to handle a one-time hookup.

Wow, the way I ate this story up!! The chemistry between Evan and Stevie (or Zee and Vee as they are adorably nicknamed) is undeniable and the buildup for them to get together had me reading far too late every night. This is an undeniably spicy book, but even without it, the sexual tension between the pair would have been intriguing enough to keep me reading. There was something undeniably attractive about the fact that a bigshot, wealthy athlete, who can and does have any girl who wants, chooses Stevie and continues to choose her at every turn.

I appreciated that Tomforde gives the characters complicated backstories and hangups that have led them to this point and threaten their ability to just give in and be together. Both characters have some generational trauma from complicated relationships with their parents. Additionally, Stevie had a bad experience from a longtime boyfriend who was also an athlete. I also loved that Stevie's favorite hobbies are volunteering at a dog shelter and thrifting!

Tomforde's books are extremely body and sex positive. Stevie has a lot of hangups with accepting her body, and specifically its size. Zanders does nothing but affirm her and encourages her to accept her body while assuring her that he finds her attractive. I loved his acceptance and praise for her.

I did think this book was too long. It dragged a good bit after the first half. It just did not need to be nearly 500 pages. I also thought the way Zander's rep is turned into the villain of the story was a bit over the top. However, I can forgive it all this because I just loved this book so much!
