Lovelight Farms (Lovelight #1) by B.K. Borison
In an effort to save the Christmas tree farm she’s loved since she was a kid, she enters a contest with instafamous influencer Evelyn St. James. With the added publicity and the $100,000 cash prize, she might just be able to save the farm from its financial woes. There’s just one problem. To make the farm seem like a romantic destination for the holidays, she lied on the application and said she owns Lovelight Farms with her boyfriend. Only there is no boyfriend.
Enter her best friend Luka Peters. He just came home for some hot chocolate, and somehow got a farm and a serious girlfriend in the process.
Lovelight Farms is a romantic comedy featuring a handsome freckled data analyst, a messy, optimistic Christmas-tree-farm owner, and a small town with the best hazelnut lattes on the east coast.
This sweet and steamy romance is a holiday happily ever after and the first book in a series of interconnected standalones following the three Lovelight owners.
Review: In a desperate bid to save her failing Christmas Tree farm, Stella Bloom enters an influencer contest that would bring her publicity and a $100,000 cash prize if she can win. But she lied on the application that she has a boyfriend to make the farm seem like a romantic destination. In desperation, she asks her best friend Luka Peters to stand in as her boyfriend.
I have to admit that I do love a fake dating trope, even when they're usually wildly improbable. It was fun the way this book was set on a Christmas tree farm. It felt lightly Christmas-y but I think it would be great to read any time of year, honestly. I did enjoy getting to hear the ends and outs of running the business. This is a fairly large-scale farm with multiple employees that Stella is anxious to keep employed and fun add ons like a store and treats that can be purchased on site. And Luka is a great leading man! He is super attractive, attentive, and adores his mother.
This was cute but I did feel like it lacked tension. The two main characters are very close and are clearly very into each other but never acted on. The fake dating thing spurs them on to start really dating and then they're just together. Which is a great, healthy trajectory! But just super flat on page. I also personally often feel like friends to lovers can come across as lacking in intense chemistry and that felt true for these two.
The influencer plotline also just felt super unnecessary and not particularly believable. I know fake dating often feels sort of difficult to believe, but it just seemed like Stella could have applied to the competition without lying about having a boyfriend.
