Kit's Surprise (American Girl: Kit #3) by Valerie Tripp

Summary (from the publisher): It's just before Christmas when Kit overhears the terrible news that her family may lose their house. Kit wants to earn money to help out, but she gets stuck taking care of cranky Uncle Hendrick and his nasty dog Inky instead. Kit and her best friend have had a fight, so she has no one to turn to. Can she still find a way to make the holidays bright?

Review: It's almost Christmas and Kit finds out that her family will lose their house soon if they're unable to pay the mortgage. To help her mother, Kit agrees to start going to her ornery Uncle Hendrick's house every day to help him as her recovers from an illness. Meanwhile, Kit and Ruthie have a big fight and falling out so Kit feels very isolate and alone.

I really enjoyed this book and so did my children. Kit and Ruthie have a very dramatic fight and don't see eye to eye on their friendship traditions as Kit's life circumstances change. I genuinely felt bad for both girls and hated to see their close friendship floundering! I also loved seeing Kit pitch in to help her family and work hard to earn money to help pay the electric bill. Kit getting stuck at her uncle's house due to an ice storm as Christmas approaches also very dramatic and really captured my kids' attention!

I'm so glad the timing worked out for me to be able to read this right before Christmas because it was a great story about what really matters - giving to others and spending time with those that mean the most to you. This had a great peak into the past section with an overview of what Christmas would have been like during the Great Depression.
