In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren
Everything goes black, but then she gasps awake on an airplane bound for Utah, where the same holiday begins all over again. With one hilarious disaster after another sending her back to the plane, Mae must break free of the time loop—and finally get her true love under the mistletoe.
Review: Maelyn Jones love her family tradition of traveling to a Utah cabin where she has spent the holidays every year since she was born with her parents' college friends and their families. But this year, she finds herself seemingly caught in a time loop, reliving the same days at the cabin over and over. Can she figure out how to break free?
This was a cute holiday romance with a dash of magical realism. I loved the found family, the sense of history the FMC has with all of the characters and the cabin setting, and all the fun holiday scenes. It was such a fast paced read and I flew through it in just a couple days. I could see this translating well to the screen for the upcoming film adaptation!
I buddy read this book and my friend pointed out how similar this book is in themes to The Summer I Turned Pretty! The vacation home shared by college friends of the parents and the FMC being in a love triangle of sorts with two brothers in particular. So this book is absolutely a good choice for fans of that series. But of course, the difference in this being the magical realism, all the fun Holiday scenes, and it is a standalone book not a series.
I enjoyed the magical realism aspect that reminded me of Groundhog Day, with a caveat. On the one hand, I appreciated that the book didn't go into a lot of technical descriptions or details with this time loop. I find that too much detail makes it seem increasingly less believable and takes me out of it. On the other hand, the book just sort of drops this whole plot line off in the end with little explanation. I needed more information! And why was she not more freaked to be repeating the same days over and over?!
This was cute and light and enjoyable. Will it make a lasting impression on my long term? No. But I enjoyed it a lot in the moment.
I went back and forth between the physical and audiobook for this. The audiobook was narrated by Patti Murin who did an incredible job, and I would highly recommend in either format.
