The Shadow Rising (The Wheel of Time #4) by Robert Jordan
In Tar Valon, Min sees portents of hideous doom. Will the White Tower itself be broken?
In the Two Rivers, the Whitecloaks ride in pursuit of a man with golden eyes, and in pursuit of the Dragon Reborn.
In Cantorin, among the Sea Folk, High Lady Suroth plans the return of the Seanchan armies to the mainland.
In the Stone of Tear, the Lord Dragon considers his next move. It will be something no one expects, not the Black Ajah, not Tairen nobles, not Aes Sedai, not Egwene or Elayne or Nynaeve.
Against the Shadow rising stands the Dragon Reborn.....
Review: In this fourth installment, the Dark One grows ever closer. The cast of characters fighting evil forces are dispersed, with danger ever looming, all working with all their powers and strength to defeat the growing danger.
This book has a large cast of characters, and the perspective is ever revolving between them. The reader travels to Min in Tar Valon, Perrin in the Two Rivers, and journeys with Rand, the Dragon Reborn. I did love Perrin's journey and character development in this book to rise as a leader and defender. It did feel like forces were converging and coming together in this book. But it is also just another installment among many, so the sense of things left undone was great.
This was an immense book that took me weeks to read, which is highly unusual for me. I debated not finishing it multiple times. Although I feel very invested in the story and the characters, this dragged a lot for me. While we saw a lot of progress with Perrin's storyline, other characters didn't seem to accomplish much in this book. I also missed Moiraine, who was virtually absent from this book. In the end, I mostly just felt relieved to have made it through all seven hundred pages.
