Review: Of course, this is on some level disappointing because this is a 37-page short story and not the full-length novel, we all want and need from Abby! But I do love getting a little insight into a character we meet in one of her full-length novels. And in just a few pages, Abby Jimenez has set up a very promising beginning to what is sure to be another great love story.
Despite its short length, the characters in this are very well defined and described. This really just takes us along for a meet-cute scene, but yet we still get a strong sense of who the characters are. I actually really like that Doug in this story is not drop-dead handsome! In fact, he is as described as having "acne scars on his cheeks, deep permanent smile lines around his brown eyes, and crooked teeth" (10). And yet!! "Conventionally, none of this should have made him attractive, but he had a rugged sexiness about him. Like this was a guy who knew what to do with a carburetor. This was someone who could get a baby calf out of a birth canal. He could install gutters." This felt so realistic to me. Not everyone is absolutely gorgeous but that is not required for a great love. I love Abby for this!
Would love to think we might one day get Maddy and Doug's whole story but until then this will have to do.
