Empire of Storms (Throne of Glass #5) by Sarah J. Maas

Summary (from the publisher): Only the greatest sacrifice can turn the tide of war.

The long path to the throne has only just begun for Aelin Galathynius as war looms on the horizon. Loyalties have been broken and bought, friends have been lost and gained, and those who possess magic find themselves increasingly at odds with those who don't.

With her heart sworn to the warrior-prince by her side and her fealty pledged to the people she is determined to save; Aelin will delve into the depths of her power to protect those she loves. But as monsters emerge from the horrors of the past, dark forces stand poised to claim her world. The only chance for salvation lies in a desperate quest that may take more from Aelin than she has to give, a quest that forces her to choose what-and who-she's willing to sacrifice for the sake of peace.

Kingdoms collide in this fifth book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Throne of Glass series.

Review: Aelin has her prince and her friends by her side. But dark forces loom and to claim her throne and keep those she loves safe; Aelin knows she must face war in this fifth installment in the series.

I had a rocky start with this series, but I really do love it now. This was the best installment yet. I love Aelin's story and the team of loyal friends and followers by her side. I was also particularly invested in Manon and Elide's stories in this installment and looked forward to the chapters that focused on their stories.

This book has at least seven rotating points of view. There are a lot of characters and a lot of subplots to keep up with. It was also over seven hundred pages and took a considerable amount of time to read. I find it interesting that this book is technically shelved as young adult and up until now has been closed door (no graphic intimate scenes). But this book deviates from that and does include a somewhat explicit scene between Aelin and her love. While I do think it is what readers wanted, I was surprised to see such a big departure from the rest of the series.

This book ends on such an immense cliffhanger!! There is much to be done, a great fight and struggle lies ahead. After initially wondering if I wanted to even go on with the series, I finish this book truly having enjoyed it and looking forward to the final two books in the series.
