Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass #1) by Sarah J. Maas

Summary (from the publisher): In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king's champion. Her name is Celaena Sardothien.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass—and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.

Review: Trained assassin Calaena Sardothien arrives at the castle of glass to compete with twenty-three killers. If she wins the competition, she will be released from prison to serve as the king's champion for four years before earning her freedom. But as if the competition isn't enough, Calaena finds herself increasing drawn to the Crown Prince. And something evil is lurking within the palace, killing off her competitors one by one. Can Calaena survive the threat and also win the competition in order to survive?

This was a fun, action packed storyline. But I just did not get into it the way I had hoped! I have heard from other readers that the books build and get better as the series goes on and I hope that that is true. I also did not enjoy the narrative style used by the reader of the audio book. Really struggled with this one but will give it the benefit of the doubt and try book two to see if it does in fact continue to get more enjoyable.
