Decoded

Summary (from the publisher): Decoded is a book like no other: a collection of lyrics and their meanings that together tell the story of a culture, an art form, a moment in history, and one of the most provocative and successful artists of our time.

Review: This book is hard to classify - part memoir, part lyrical dissection, part coffee table material. This book gives an insight into the world and history of rap as Jay-Z sees it. From growing up in the projects of Brooklyn to sitting down with presidents and Oprah, this book covers it all. At the end of each chapter, Jay-Z lists lyrics of various songs and goes line by line to describe what he's referencing and feeling in each word he uses. His references cover everything from Martin Luther King to Tennyson. I do wish those that are so opposed to rap could look beyond the raw language and blatant sexuality to discover the nuances and depth of meaning hidden within what Jay-Z describes as his body of work and his poetry.
