Samantha's Suprise: A Christmas Story (American Girl: Samantha #3) by Maxine Rose Schur

Summary (from the publisher): The two weeks before Christmas are filled with activity as Samantha finishes her homemade presents and makes preparations for visiting relatives.

Review: In this sweet, Christmas story, Samantha is so excited for the holiday season. She has spent hours making Christmas decorations for her grandmother's house and working on Christmas presents. But her Christmas plans are altered when her grandmother brings in storebought decor to impress her uncle Gard's holiday guest Cornelia. Samantha feels like Cornelia has ruined her Christmas, but her feelings change once Cornelia arrives.

I am so sorry to say this yet again, but Samantha's books are just not as thrilling as the other girls in the American Girls series. I have read so many of these with my kids and they have been riveted but their reviews were just not great for this one. I LOVE Samantha. She is such a kind girl with a huge heart. Her care and attention to gifts for everyone is touching. But this is just not filled with the dramatic hijinks that the other American Girls experience. This is still a great story but just way tamer.

I do love the message here and how Samantha realizes that something appearances can be deceiving. While she initially resents Cornelia's visit, she quickly sees what a kind and thoughtful person Cornelia is and winds up grateful for her presence. While we didn't read this at Christmastime, this would be such a fun read to get in the holiday spirit.
