Review: This was another perfect short story in the Kit collection! Valerie Tripp does such a great job of using these short stories to build upon a subplot from the greater books and to add depth to the characters. This story allows us to get to know Mrs. Howard better, who was really only a background figure for the most part in the main series. Kit and Mrs. Howard bond over the course of this book as Kit must look to her for help when she gets hurt playing baseball. 

My kids were riveted to the plot of this book, especially when Kit has her lip busted and realizes she needs stitches! My nephew had just needed stitches on his lip the day before, so they were exclaiming at how it was just like real life! They were worried about Kit, and the tension felt real. I also loved that this humanized Mrs. Howard a lot and ended up giving her a new purpose and meaning to her days through the hospital trip ultimately leading to her finding a job. 

I also really liked that this book shows Kit pursuing one of her passions - baseball! Mrs. Howard thinks it's dangerous and sort of unladylike, but Kit plays anyway. The peek into the past section had a great overview on the history of the sport and how women were what kept games going during World War II and I just loved getting this historical insight behind the story.
