Kaya Shows the Way: A Sister Story (American Girl: Kaya #5) by Janet Beeler Shaw

Summary (from the publisher): Summertime means salmon fishing at thundering Celilo Falls--and horce racing, games, parades, feasting, and dancing, too! Kaya loves to join the fun, but she's also got something serious on her mind: searching for her lost sister, Speaking Rain. Thousands of Native American families and friends gather at Celilo Falls each summer, and Kaya hopes that someone may have word of her sister. Kaya's older sister, Brown Deer, is on her mind, too. Brown Deer will soon marry Cut Cheek, a thought that makes Kaya both glad and sad. She lost one sister when she had to leave Speaking Rain with the enemies. Now will she lose Brown Deer?

Review: Kaya and her family have traveled to Celilo Falls for salmon fishing time, which also means seeing lots of groups of other people and lots of games and feasting. Kaya is looking forward to fun, but also to looking for her lost sister, Speaking Rain.

It was absolutely fascinating learning more about Celilo Falls. During Kaya's time, thousands of Native Americans would gather there each summer to fish, trade, socializie, and more. I loved learning more about the falls and the practices and lifestyle of the time period. The peak into the past section also gave some great background information on this historical practice, as well as the devastating loss of the falls due to a series of dams that were built later in time.

I loved the history behind this book but did find the plot lacking. I was thrilled Kaya is able to track down Speaking Rain at last in this book but wasn't thrilled how it all played out and just found the tension and plot development lackluster.
